PORTRAITS IN NOSARA

Best Beaches, Light and What to Wear
As a portrait photographer, I find Nosara an amazing place to work. The green season gives us an epic, lush backdrop, and we're lucky to have some of the most epic sunset colours on the coast.
Best Beaches for Portraits
Playa Pelada
Playa Pelada is where most of my sessions happen. My favourite spot is the far north end of the bay. There's a great little cove and a river outlet, with super nice greenery high up on the sand, and we often get to see seahawks or kingfishers there. That spot receives the sunset in an epic way.
At low tide, the rocks and tide pools give natural frames and texture. High tide smooths out the foreground but loses those details. About an hour after sunrise the light is soft, and two hours before sunset brings warm light from the west.
Ostional
Ostional is the dramatic option, with black sand and a bay that faces northwest, so it catches the last direct sunlight before it dips below the horizon. During arribada seasons (mass turtle nesting), we respect the protected zones and keep our distance from nesting turtles and hatchlings.
Light in the Tropics
Near the equator, the sun is high overhead for much of the day, which makes harsh shadows on faces, so golden hour is the most reliable time. The dry season (November–March) brings clearer skies. In the green season (April–October), cloud cover softens the light naturally, with no reflectors or flash needed. And if the weather doesn't play along, we reschedule at no extra cost.
What to Wear
Light, neutral or soft colours look best on the beach, white, cream, pale blues. Dark clothing can turn into a dark shape against the bright sand, and it soaks up the heat. Solid colours work better than busy patterns, and big logos and neon are best left at home. Matching isn't necessary, but coordinating works well.
Flowing fabrics catch the breeze naturally, and barefoot always looks right on the beach. Don't fight the humidity, beach waves happen naturally, and anti-humidity products beat heavy gels.
Kids, Meltdowns and the Family Dog

When toddlers have a meltdown, there's almost always a moment soon after when they laugh about it. That's the moment to capture. It's the one we can't plan, and it fully ends up producing the absolute best shots. So no stress if the little ones aren't cooperating. I keep it relaxed and playful, and there's no rush.
Travelling with your dog? Bring them along. Pets fully count as family, and we get some really warm pet shots too.
A Moment I Loved
I was shooting an amateur model for a swimwear company and just needed a natural laugh. I tried everything and got nothing. Then, as I was walking back over the tide pools to change lenses, a wave caught the tripod I'd set up, and the model started laughing. I abandoned the tripod and got the shot!
When to Book

Nosara works year-round for portraits. If I had to pick, it's November and December, when the dry season begins, the skies clear up and the jungle is still super lush and green. I feel like the ocean teaches us patience, the best shots come when you watch, wait and adjust.
How to Prepare

Honestly? Nothing really. Just bring your natural vacation vibes and I'll take care of the rest.
